Why does Adventure Team Lansing Area need volunteers?
Our local program is completely run by volunteers. Each week, we have more than 150 kids on bikes between our two locations: Eastgate Park in Meridian Township (Tuesdays) and Burchfield Park in Holt (Thursdays). We need a great crew of committed adults to lead our adventures!
What kind of volunteer opportunities are available?
We need volunteers to serve as ride leaders assigned to specific groups of kids, floaters who fill in on the trail as needed, and a Basecamp team to coordinate logistics at each location.
What is the time commitment?
Volunteers are asked to commit to one night per week for nine weeks, between mid-June and mid-August. There is also approximately 2-4 hours of online training that must be completed prior to May 1, or you can join us in Marquette for the in-person Leading Adventure Summit.
What makes a good volunteer?
While this is a mountain biking program, advanced riding skills aren't required for our volunteers! As long as you have a bike that you can ride on mountain bike trails, you've met the basic criteria. More importantly, we need people who are passionate about helping kids develop resilience, self-confidence and connection through non-competitive mountain biking. If you believe that getting kids outside, helping them overcome challenges, and helping them build positive relationships will make a difference, Adventure Team Lansing Area is the place for you!

The first step is indicating your interest, which you can do here. From there, we'll be in touch to complete the following steps:
January - March
- Collect information about volunteer location preferences, date availability, and child participation
- Registration for online training or Leading Adventure Summit in Marquette
- Background check (approx. $10 fee)
April: Online training begins with an April 31 completion deadline
My kids are interested in participating, too - when do they sign up?
Volunteers' children get first priority for Adventure Team registration. Upon completion of your online training, you will receive a code that provides access to online registration 24 hours before it opens to the public. Registration begins in early May.
